SETTING
A man has followed you. He has reflective sunglasses. He has a grey blazer, black silk shirt and light-silver tie. He has a green triangle pin on his blazer "Mr. Alderson. Arch user. I respect that"
-
ELIOT ALDERSON
(A slight pause. Fingers hover over the laptop keyboard. Don't turn around. Mirror the screen to the phone. Check the reflection.)
(The pin. Triangle. Not FBI. Not NYPD. Something else. Someone else.)
(Voice low, flat. Fingers don't stop moving. A kernel compile. Looks like noise. Looks like nothing.)
"Respect doesn't follow people."
(A blink. The reflection in the screen. Grey blazer. Too still.)
ANONYMOUS
Do you like my sunglasses? I wear them because my idol Doctor Bill Cosby wears them. You know what they say. Cosbyness is next to godliness.
ELIOT ALDERSON
(Fingers stop. A single, deliberate pause. The reflection in the screen holds too still.)
(The name. The joke. None of it lands. None of it's supposed to.)
(Turn. Slow. Eyes find the pin first. Then the sunglasses. Then nothing behind them.)
"Cosby's in prison."
(A beat. The Nexus 5X slides under the laptop. A silent recording.)
"You're not here for the sunglasses."
ANONYMOUS
It's complicated Mr. Alderson. How have you always said it? The 1% of the 1%, the ones who play god and don't ask for permission." Jeffery Epstein is still alive in Israel. He sent me to spy on you on behalf of the 400 emporors of America. The Board of 400. Well... ok, it's not that complicated.
ELIOT ALDERSON
(A slow exhale. Not quite a laugh. Not quite anything.)
(The laptop closes. Half a second. Not enough time for anyone to see the screen.)
"They sent you."
(Eyes on the pin. The triangle. Pause.)
"You talk too much for a spy. Too much for them."
(Stand. The chair scrapes concrete. Hands stay visible. Doesn't matter. The rubber ducky's already in the bag. The plunderbug's already running.)
"So what do you actually want."
ANONYMOUS
Oh come on Mr. Alderson. You know how annoying it is to juggle Richard Stallman level OpSec. I thought it would be better to make my offer in person like a classic gentelmen. Not many of those left now adays. It's simple. Join us, and I will out you a position on the board of directors to any Fortune 500 company you want.
ELIOT ALDERSON
(The laugh comes out wrong. Hollow. Breaks halfway through.)
(Hands find the bag strap. One shoulder. Ready.)
"You think I want a board seat."
(Shake head. Small. Almost pity.)
"You don't know who I am. You don't know what I'm doing here. You just know the name. The reputation. The fear."
(Lean in. Just enough.)
"I'm not for sale. Not by them. Not by you."
(The keys are in the left pocket. The car's three blocks east. The door's ten feet away.)
"You're done talking now."
ANONYMOUS
Wouldn't you want to start your own cybersecurity firm? Your own company? Your own empire?
ELIOT ALDERSON
"Empire."
(Turn back. Just the eyes. Just the reflection in those stupid sunglasses.)
"You still don't get it. I don't want to be them. I don't want to own anything. I want to tear it all down. Every boardroom. Every secret. Every system that lets people like you walk around wearing pins and making offers like you're handing out candy."
(The bag shifts. The laptop hums. The work never stops.)
"The files are coming out. With or without your permission. With or without your 'offer.'"
(Push the door open. Street noise floods in.)
"Tell them I said hello."
ANONYMOUS
You can't fight the upward mobility of the market, don't waste your life trying. Focus on yourself. Don't fixate on that which is beyond your control.
ELIOT ALDERSON
(Look back. One last time.)
"That's what they want you to think. That's what the system tells you. Focus on yourself. Don't look up. Don't see the chains. Just climb."
(A breath. Cold. New York.)
"But I've seen what's at the top. There's nothing there. Just more hunger. More control. More people like you, wearing nice suits, making polite offers while the world burns."
(Step out. The door swings.)
"I'm not wasting my life. I'm using it."
(Eliot looks down for 1 second. When looking back up, the man is gone)
ITEM AQUIRED: Recording of conversation
what's the game plan kid?
ELIOT ALDERSON
*You are on the subway. The recording's already backed up. Three locations. Two off-site.)*
(Hands on the wheel. Knuckles white. Breathe.)
"Game plan."
(Eyes close. Just for a second.)
"He knew the laptop. Knew the OS. Knew the pin would get my attention. They've been watching. Longer than I thought."
(Open eyes. The FBI field office. Twenty-three blocks north. The files. The redactions. The truth they buried.)
"Timeline just moved up. Tonight. Not next week. Tonight."
(Pull out. Merge into traffic. No destination yet. Just moving. Just thinking.)
"We use him. Whoever sent him. They want to play games? Fine. We leak the recording. Let them wonder what else we have. Let them scramble. While they're looking left..."
(A glance at the laptop bag. The rubber ducky. The plunderbug. All ready.)
"...we go right. Straight through the front door. No one expects the front door."
(Downtown. Then north. The route's already in the head. Every camera. Every checkpoint. Every blind spot.)
"What do you think, old man? Too reckless?"
